Innovation & Entrepreneurship

An idea can travel a long way at PMC Tech — from a second-year idea competition to a funded prototype, an industry hackathon, a patent and a start-up of its own. The Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell rated the institution’s Innovation Council three stars for 2021–22.

Idea to venture

An idea’s path, year by year

Creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship are practised from the first year to the last, each year asking a little more of an idea.

  1. From the first year

    Join in

Innovation clubs and ideation camps, run through the Innovation Council.

  2. Second year

    Say it

An idea-collection competition for second-year students.

    200+ ideas collected

  3. Third year

    Build it

Innovation product development: an idea made into a working product.

₹1 lakh DST funding a project

  4. Final year

    Test it

Techkathon, with leading industries: a real problem, solved and shown to its experts.

  5. Beyond

    Own it

A patent, a pre-incubation space, time and credit for a start-up — under the policy.

Where ideas take shape

A council, a lab and a centre

Three bodies make innovation part of the timetable rather than an extra: they set the calendar, provide the room and tools, and carry students’ projects forward.

Institution’s Innovation Council

3.0 Star rating in innovation, 2021–22

Set up under the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell to encourage, inspire and nurture students — through a network of innovation clubs — by exposing them to new ideas and processes while they are still forming. It runs the innovation and start-up policy and the Ministry’s calendar of activities.

IEDC

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre

Builds an innovation-driven, entrepreneurial culture through students’ own projects. Among those from Computer Science and Engineering:

  • Automated pesticide spraying for greenhouse farming, with an industrial robot
  • Drone spraying of pesticide for mango trees
  • An intelligent ozonating system for public rest rooms
  • An IoT smart vessel
  • A wireless sensor network for security at toll gates
  • An automated mobile-charging app for Android

Show and compete

Where students show their work

An idea is tested in front of people: visitors, industry experts, juries and rivals.

Tech Expo

The institution’s grand technical exhibition, where engineering, polytechnic, ITI and school students show their projects — around 700 of them on the day, before school students and people from industry.

Techkathon

A talent hunt of eight to ten hours. Teams of three to five students take real problems set by core industries, and present their solutions — an idea, a prototype or a working model — to the industry experts who set them. The best win internships and placement offers on the spot.

Incubation and entrepreneurship

The MSME Business Incubator is there for entrepreneurs who take on the region’s social problems with technology. It offers:

  • Guidance in preparing a business plan
  • Work space, internet, the library and the laboratories
  • Meeting rooms
  • Industry experts for specialist needs, and events for small enterprises

The R&D Cell’s Centre for Incubation and Centre for Entrepreneur Development work alongside it.

Innovation & start-up policy

The Innovation and Start-up Policy

PMC Tech’s Institution Innovation and Startup Policy sets out what a student or a faculty member with an idea can ask for. The Innovation Council carries it out; its President is the single point of contact for innovation and start-ups.

  • Support for a team

A student team can present its proposal to the Council, which may fund mentoring, laboratory equipment, consultancy and technology.

  • A place to work

A pre-incubation space with work benches, computers, Wi-Fi, audio-visual equipment and room to meet mentors.

  • Help with the paperwork

Support for filing and licensing intellectual property, business planning, feasibility studies and technology mentoring.

  • Time for a start-up

A student may defer a semester or more to work on a start-up, on the Council’s recommendation.

  • Credit for the work

Work on a start-up or its first product may count towards a mini project, major project or internship.

  • Recognition

Annual awards for the outstanding idea, the innovation champion and the start-up of the year. Faculty may take leave to build a venture, and mentoring one counts in their appraisal.
